Building a Stronger Community: How MPSA Supports Recovery and Hope

In McDowell County, the challenges of substance use affect individuals, families, and entire communities. At MPSA, we believe in a future where every person has access to the resources, support, and care they need to heal and thrive. Through advocacy, prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and sustained recovery, we are working every day to create lasting change.

Why Our Work Matters

Substance use is more than an individual struggle—it’s a community issue that requires a united response. Many residents face barriers to treatment, a lack of education about available resources, and stigma that prevents them from seeking help. MPSA is committed to breaking down these barriers by providing access to life-saving services, connecting individuals with support networks, and promoting policies that make recovery possible for all.

Our Approach: The Five Pillars of MPSA

Our mission is represented by the five sides of our pentagon logo, each symbolizing a key area of focus:

🔴 Advocacy – We work to influence policies that expand treatment options and protect the rights of those in recovery.

🟣 Prevention – Through education and outreach, we equip individuals with the knowledge and tools to prevent substance use before it starts.

Harm Reduction – We support initiatives that reduce the risks associated with substance use, such as overdose prevention and safe-use education.

Treatment – We connect individuals with the resources they need to begin and sustain their recovery journey.

🟢 Sustained Recovery – Recovery is a lifelong process, and we ensure continued support for individuals and families through community programs and partnerships.

Creating Awareness: The Colors of Our Mission

Our awareness colors reflect the realities of substance use and recovery:

  • Red – Substance use

  • Purple – Opioids

  • Black – Fentanyl

  • Silver – Overdose awareness

  • Teal – Recovery

The semicolon in our logo represents a pause, a moment to reflect, and a reminder that the story is not over—there is always more to be done. And just like the lotus flower, those facing challenges can rise above them, transforming into something stronger and more beautiful.

How You Can Help

We cannot do this work alone. Whether you’re an individual looking to support a loved one, a business interested in corporate sponsorship, or someone passionate about advocacy, there are many ways to get involved:

🔹 Donate – Every contribution helps expand our reach and provide essential services

🔹 Volunteer – Join our team to make a direct impact in the community

🔹 Spread Awareness – Share our message and help end the stigma around substance use and recovery.
